SC34/WG4 Test of Live Meeting

Hi Shawn,

I think that would be great to test it on Thursday. I did notice the 1:1-chat feature but I couldn’t get the “shared notes” to work or even post one.

… but that might be caused by me not being used to using the service.

I see. I certainly don’t mind the quiet talk, especially if it helps us make progress.

There are two features in Live Meeting that could be useful for this context. I just tried both using the Java web client; I assume that the rich client as an equal, if not better offering.

1. There is a 1:1 chat available; bring up the attendees list, select the person you’d like to chat with, and you get a classic, private IM window between the two of you.

2. The shared notes pad can be used to write notes that you’re comfortable with everyone seeing.

Perhaps we could give these two features a try on Thursday? If they don’t work, we could pursue a separate IRC-like chat technology.

Hi all,

An IRC-like chat enables ”quiet talk in the background” but without the intrusion. During our last Teleconference I was on Messenger with a couple of other attendees sharing links and small comments. I think it would be valuable to have a “conference-wide chat” enabled e.g. in one side of the screen. I thought “Shared notes” was just that, but it seems it is only for the presenter/conference-manager to write in this.

I should note that I have not tried this before on a teleconference, so I don’t know if it scales.

PS: If “quiet talk” is a bad word for meeting organizers, we could call it “knowledge-sharing” instead J

Thanks for reporting success.

I’m interested in better understanding the desire for the IRC like chat. If we’re all on the phone, what’s the purpose? Is it record keeping, a mechanism to ask for the floor, etc? I’m curious so that I can better suggest solutions to the problem …

Hi all,

I have no problems connecting to Live Meeting – I access it using the installed app on Windows XP.

I do lack an “IRC-kindof-chat” for all users, but maybe that has to be enabled separately. I think it would be of great value to have an open channel/chat that all participants can see.

Excellent. I’ll try the Chrome browser tomorrow; that should get us success on four of the five major browsers ( IE, FF, Safari and Chrome ) …

I’m still interested in knowing if anyone on a UNIX/Linux box was successful; I don’t have either of those at home/work to test on …

Thanks again for reporting success!

This is a test for for SC34's Work Group 4. Ideally we'll be able to use this service to assist in document review during our teleconferences.

I'd encourage WG4 members to connect to this meeting ( it will be available for 12 hours starting at 4PM Pacific ) to ensure that there are no connectivity problems.

If you do run into problems, please email me at ShawnV at microsoft.com with your issue.

If the LM test experience is unacceptable, naturally we'll try to find an alternative.

Thank you for participating in this test.
