Yes, I think that xs:string will be much more future proof.

Just for illustration, see how grammar for version attribute in DocBook
V5 is defined:

http://www.docbook.org/docs/howto/#cust-naming

OTOH, I don't expect that people will create subsets/supersets of OOXML
as often as with DocBook.
