Proposed definition for "byte" (to be included in all Parts where "byte" is mentioned)

This was harder than I thought. Wanting to steer clear of word like "entity" (too confusing in an XML context), or "datum" (too fancy). So, how about:

"byte
         an 8-bit data item"

 ?
