On the issue of validating the XSD schemas, may I suggest an appropriate
test would might be

"The schemas are acceptable quality if they pass without error two of
three credible alternative XSD implementations."

I suggest the appropriate ones are

 1) the most recent version of MS' validator in .NET
 2) the most recent version of Xerces
 3) some other tool: Henry's XSV, IBM's SQC, SAXON 9, Oracle's implementation

That is a pretty low bar.
