The consequence of no action on this is that, in order for maximum compatibility with Microsoft Excel, but maintaining an identification with the originating application, hacks such as overloading the version string must be used.

I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by the developers of other libraries and applications if this could be avoided in the future.
